12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (NIV)
There is no other name. The popular theology of the day tells us to believe in a god or higher power, but what or who this god may be is insignificant so long as you believe in something. Repeatedly, we hear about this name. There is no other name the Bible declares. People are healed in Jesus’ name. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord. Scripture repeatedly points out the name of Jesus is more than significant.
In the Bible people are given names based on something that happened at birth, how the mother felt, or even where they were born. Jesus was named by God. The angel instructed Mary that she would give Him the name Jesus which means ‘Jehovah is salvation.’
The word ‘salvation’ means to be delivered from. Salvation comes through Jesus alone.
We must remember that God is a just God. There will be punishment for sin and He alone is the authority to decide what that punishment will be. His prescribed sentence for sin is death. This is what we must be delivered from. It is not sin, but death. Sin is the sting of death. In other words, we only sin because the spirit of death reigns in our mortal bodies leading us further from God who is life. Salvation is deliverance from death being reconciled back to life. Jesus is that life.
He cannot simply give us a ‘get out of jail free’ card as that would not be just. Our just God must enforce His own laws so that those who sin will die. We usually think this is something that will be done on Judgment Day at the end of times, but this is not true. Death entered into all mankind when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden. We are born in this condition and must be delivered from it.
God, however, is also merciful and loving. He chooses to stand in our place to receive the wrath of God that should have fallen on us. And He has declared that any who choose to put their faith in Christ will be counted innocent before Him. No other god has done this for man. No other god by any other name has offered himself in our place that we might be saved. Therefore He was given the name above all names.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for making a way of salvation. Let us never be content to group Jesus in with all other gods of every other religion. Let His name be ever on our lips. He is our salvation. Amen.
