All Who Hate God will Love Death

Proverbs 8:36 says all who hate God love death

God told Adam and Eve that if they ate the forbidden fruit, they would surely die.  They didn’t physically die, but God’s priority is spiritual, not physical.  The curse of man’s first sin was eventual physical death, but immediate spiritual death.  The Bible says the sting of death is sin.  Every time we sin, it is a reminder that death is alive in my spirit.  Through faith in Christ, we can be delivered from the spirit of death, but faith in Christ means that we learn to hate death and hate the sting of death-sin.  We should hate sin because it works to keep death alive in our spirit when God wants to pour into our hearts the spirit of life.  Here is what God says about it:

“…all who hate me love death.”

Proverbs 8:36
(NIV)

Wow!  Think about our society for a moment.  How many different social movements, governments, and criminal organizations that seek after if not glorify death.  Governments torture and murder their own citizens.  Right now, there are so many people working hard to protect abortion.  Abortion is the murder of innocence.  Why would any society protect it, but we do?  The symbols of death are rampant.  Anywhere there is the spirit of rebellion, there is also the spirit of death being glorified.  Think about the album covers, t-shirts, and stickers on the back windows of cars. We see images of death in music videos and television so much that we are immune to it.   The same societies that have rejected God embrace death.  The Scripture is true.

“God’s hatred for death is like a mother’s hatred for her daughter’s rapist”

God’s hatred for death is like a mother’s hatred for her daughter’s rapist.  To help the people of The Old Testament and us, God has some laws warning the people to stay away from anything associated with death.  If anyone came in contact with a dead body, they would be declared unclean and unable to go into the Temple or offer their sacrifices until they were cleansed.  The lesson was clear-stay away from death because it keeps us from His presence.

To show just how serious God is about avoiding things that cause death to our spirit, let me share a passage of Scripture with you:

Leviticus 15:16-19
16 “‘When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 17 Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. 18 When a man has sexual relations with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both of them must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.
19 “‘When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening.
(NIV)

The first part is talking about sex.  There is nothing said about marriage so this applies to married men and women also.  Now, we know that sex is a God-given gift to be enjoyed within the boundaries of marriage between a man and a woman.  There is no sin in having sex if you are married.  And it was not a sin in the Old Testament either (don’t believe me? Read the Song of Solomon ).  So, if there is no sin, why are they unclean as if they have come in contact with death?  Because they had sex, they cannot enter the holiness of the temple just as if the touched a dead body.

The issue is the semen.  The Scripture specifically says if a man and woman have sexual relations AND there is an emission of semen, they would be unclean.  So, let’s be clear.  If they had sex without emission of semen, they would not have been unclean.

The second part of this passage is also about bodily fluid specifically the menstrual blood of a woman.  Now, a woman’s period is just a part of nature.  No woman chose to have periods.  And it seems to me that they would rather not have them.  So how can something natural that a woman can’t even avoid make them unclean as if they have been exposed to death especially when there is no sin involved.

The menstrual blood is the extra tissue developed in the uterine lining.  This lining thickens each month to provide a cozy place for the egg just in case it is fertilized.  When the woman does not get pregnant, then once a month, this extra tissue along with the unfertilized egg pours out in a bloody flow.

“When that which is supposed to produces life, doesn’t…

What do semen, unfertilized eggs, and unused uterine lining have to do with death?  These are the physical materials necessary for producing life.  When that which is supposed to produce life, doesn’t, God equates it with death.  This teaches that when we don’t produce life, we are under the dominion of the spirit of death.  If we are not pregnant and giving birth to life through the Holy Spirit, our soul will bleed out in death.

When we live to avoid death, it will not be enough.  We must live to produce life by the Holy Spirit and this will keep us from those things that will cause spiritual death in our soul.  Remember, all those who hate God love death! And God is serious about this!   To experience the full measure of God’s goodness, we must not yoke ourselves to anything God designed to produce life and doesn’t.  Music is one design of God to produce life, but if the music we listen to is not producing the life of Christ in us, we probably need to turn the dial. (Do they still have dials?).  God’s purpose for human relationships is to build one another up, encouraging them and bringing life into their spirit.  But if we are in a relationship that is not building us up, encouraging us, and filling us with the life of Christ, we need to be very careful so that we are close enough to pour life into them without allowing the relationship to bring death to us.  Church is supposed to be a place of life.  If we bring death into the church or if the church is full of death, neither are good.  God hates death.

“God’s design for you is to live to the full in the Spirit of Life”

The intensity by which God wants us to avoid the spirit of death is found in this Old Testament ritual law regarding semen and the menstrual period.  God’s design for you is to live to the full in the Spirit of life.  Don’t let death bleed out the life God has for you.  He is life and anyone or anything working to separate itself from God is death.  Avoid it at all costs because all who hate God love death.

John 6:32-33
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
(NIV)

Have you ever had to make life changes to avoid things or people that were ushering in the spirit of death? Leave a comment and let us know what you did.

If you haven’t yet, check out my books. Prepare For Greater Things follows the journey of Abraham teaching the principles of God that will lead us to greater blessing no matter what we are going through. With All Your Heart follows the life of Moses teaching a deeper trust level to end negative cycles such as anger, depression, and unhealthy relationships.

Why did God let this happen? What is God’s will for me? Has God forgotten me? Have I messed up everything beyond repair? If you are asking yourself these questions, it is time to “prepare for greater things.” This book will give you insight into God’s desire for your life and how He will each moment, each blessing, and each heart-wrenching moment to accomplish His good will in your life. But we must understand how He is using each moment. Without this understanding, it is easy to step off the right path. It is easy to get lost in the pain of broken dreams. The good news is that the Holy Spirit teaches through the Word of God how to complete the journey and arrive at His plan for our happiness.

So many of us go through the same negative patterns. It may be different people, different places, different things, but it’s the same pattern. It’s like going round and round in the desert like the Israelites did. But God has promised to give us a straight path to our blessings rather than staying in the negative patterns. If you are sick and tired of going round and round and you want a straight path to your blessing, you need this book.
