What are You Going to Do with Your Life?

What are you going to do with your life? Did you ever hear that question growing up, maybe as a teenager? Sometimes, we don’t know what we are going to do. We have no direction at all. Even as we get older, we don’t know what we are going to do. We look for the right thing to do, and we call upon the Lord to show us what to do, but it doesn’t always seem clear.
The weird thing is that while we are trying to figure out what God wants, He is wanting to give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4). This can create some confusion, some frustration. I have said it many times and I am sure you have as well, “God, just tell me what to do.” But His response is, “What do you want to do?” “What do you want to do with your life?” And that brings us to the Verse of the Day:
Proverbs 16:3
3 Commit your work to the LORD,
and your plans will be established. (ESV)
The key to moving forward in life when I don’t know which way to go is to make sure that I commit my work to the Lord. If I commit it to the Lord, then my motivation behind the work is that God be glorified. It means the actual thing I decide to do does not dishonor Him which keeps me from doing things He prohibits.
Sometimes life can feel like the old game show “Let’s Make A Deal.” The contestants would have to pick a door not knowing what was behind it. Sometimes, they chose well and there was a new car. Other times, not so good, and they won some dirty socks or something less desirable. We want to know what’s behind the door. We want God to reveal to us what the prize will be behind each of our decisions.
God is not the sly game show host that refuses to give you even a hint. God is the good, good Father who wants to see His kid win every time. God wants us to live a vibrant, fun, meaningful life. To force us to do what we don’t want to do is not how God operates. He gives us a choice. Sometimes, the choice is obvious. If there is sin involved in one of the choices, then God is an automatic ‘no.’ I had a husband once tell me that God had brought this woman into his life because he was so miserable. The only problem was that he was married to another woman. I had to explain that God would never ‘gift’ sin to us. He doesn’t work that way.
But once sin is out of the way and we are looking for a life direction, God says, “If you will honor me in all that you do, I will establish the desires of your heart.” I will help you accomplish your dreams. The crux is getting our heart’s desires in line with God’s desires.
God has a plan for each and everyone of us. He wants us all to love people. He wants us to minister to the needs of the broken. He wants us to feed the hungry, visit the sick, love the forgotten. But aren’t the broken, hungry, sick, and forgotten found in every walk of life.
I once had a man tell me that God could not work in his life because he had gone to prison. I reminded him of Angel Tree, a ministry started by a man who got saved while in prison. I said if there had been no Christians in that prison, this man would not have been saved, and this great ministry to children with incarcerated parents never would have existed. You don’t have to be a pastor to share the Gospel. You don’t have to be a nun to feed the hungry. They are all around us.
Let the Lord purify your heart, transforming your desires into what He desires, then commit whatever you do to glorifying Him to all who see. Go and live life, enjoying every moment, and know God will lead you to those things that overflow your heart with joy. And He will do it without stress, without worry, and you don’t have to guess what’s behind the door. With God, there is something good behind every door. So, what are you going to do with your life?
