The Rock of Ages

Jesus is the Rock. When I think through the Scriptures of the times when rocks foreshadowed Christ and represented the Lord, I quickly go back to Moses. He had led the people out of Israel, but things were not going well. The people were angry. They were in the desolate wilderness. And everyone hated Him. Then God brought Moses to the Rock.
Exodus 33:21-22
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
(NIV)
The Rock of Ages reminded Moses of His goodness and the fact that He had everything under control. In a time of distress, the Rock gave comfort and peace.
I also think of when the people were thirsty in the desolate wilderness and the Lord brought Moses to the Rock.
Exodus 17:4-6
Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. (NIV)
When the people were in desperate need and it seemed as if they had nothing, the Lord provided for them. A river came out of a rock enough to give water to a million people plus all their animals. The Rock is our provision in times of need. I think of Elijah who was so depressed that he wanted to die and the Lord brought him to the Rock.
1 Kings 19:8-13
So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord
(NIV)
Elijah had expected God to forcibly overthrow Ahab and Jezebel and Elijah was disappointed with himself and with God, but then God revealed to Elijah that He works through the Spirit changing hearts, not forcing hearts. In a time of confusion, the rock gave understanding.
Finally, I think of the interaction between and Jesus and Peter. Jesus had asked the disciples who they thought He was and Jesus brought Peter to the Rock.
Matthew 16:13-19
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?”he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” NIV
Jesus reveals the immovable rock, which is the knowledge that He is the Messiah and by Him and through Him, the disciples, and us, received power to move mountains and change situations by our use of the keys of the Kingdom.
The verse of the day from Bible.com comes from Isaiah and refers to the Lord not only as the Rock, but the Rock for all ages. God has always been the immovable God able to give to us exactly what we need in any and every situation. He is the rock for all ages. Every society, every circumstance, every period of history, He has always know what we need and He has always been able to minister to us right where we are. It is not different today. No matter what you may face, He will somehow bring you to the Rock that provides, calms, gives wisdom, and releases power. He is the God for all ages.
Isaiah 26:4
4 Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
(NIV)
