Standing Strong in the World’s current

Standing strong in the world’s current.

Proverbs 14:22
22 Do not those who plot evil go astray?
But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness. (NIV)

The milieu of society is like a rushing river set to carry us along with its current. Consider how the world moves in waves of emotionalism from one issue to the next. So much of what is in our mind and heart are dictated to us by societal movements. This river of emotion and thought has been established by the god of this age, the Ancient Serpent, working to drag us away from God. We need to be standing strong in the world’s current.

False spiritual philosophies are being presented subtly everywhere we turn.

Exposure to these secular philosophies of selfishness and instant gratification will lead us to make plans that parallel the strong currents of the world’s movements. We will think of how we can get even, steal, cheat, and all those things this world says are necessary and justified to help us find the ‘good’ life. We see this, especially in our mainline denominations.

Churches who have been caught up in the rough waters of this wicked river have not simply been softened to Scripture, but they have been moved to make plans in line with secular thought regardless of the truth found in the Bible. The acceptance of practicing homosexual ministers is one example.

How do we keep from being dragged away? We make plans. We set our minds on doing the things that God has called us to. Without resolute plans of how we will interact with the world, we will inevitably be influenced by the world.

We have been designed by God as a social creature meaning a portion of how we define ourselves is a reflection of our community. To think we can walk through this life and not be affected by the way the world thinks and moves is a denial of our essence. The Bible reminds us that bad company corrupts good character. And the company we keep is not limited to flesh and blood. Those who visit our minds digitally through media can also corrupt. And Scripture says not to give up meeting with the church, a community making plans to do what God desires.

Prayer: Lord, let me not be carried off unaware of the world’s philosophies affecting how I think and feel, but teach me to plan each day to do good ready to respond in a Christlike way.
