Seeds of sorrow.
Psalms 126:5-6
5 Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them. (NIV)
The sorrows we bear are cataracts on the eyes of our soul. We struggle, at times, to see the goodness of God when life descends into hardship. But even in sorrow, we can find fertile ground for joy. Our tears are seeds of sorrow sown into the soil of God that will bring songs of joy. Sowing seeds of sorrow in the hard ground produces bitterness. What we do with the seeds of our sorrow and distress determines our ability to be joyful.
Godly sorrow comes from going to the Lord with our pain and struggle. Going to Him in prayer, meditation, worship, and church draw us into His presence. There, He ministers to us. He reassures us that He is God and that God is our Abba Father. He cares for us out of His love as a Dad to us. Bringing our pain to Him, He not only consoles us but He is moved to action on our behalf.
In Godly sorrow, we go to Him for comfort, not miracles. Anyone can get angry with God for not doing what we think He should have. Anyone can be demanding with God for Him to step up and do something. This, however, is not fertile soil for joy.
The Lord is everything to us, but first, He is our Father. When we approach Him as if He is first our financier, our maintenance man, our relationship coach, or whatever, we have made our relationship transactional not loving. We think we need miracles, but what we need is the embrace of our Heavenly Father.
Knowing God loves us as our Abba and knowing our Abba is the Supreme Being able to do all things will down the blood pressure and increase the peace. We find joy knowing our spiritual Dad can beat up the devil every day and twice on Sunday. This revelation transforms our valleys to precious moments where the Lord comforted us in His embrace. We remember how He comforted us more than we remember the pain. Then our joy will burst forth.
Prayer: Lord, help me to come to You as my Abba to be reminded of Your goodness. Let me sow tears that I might reap songs of joy. Amen.
