Psalms 119:105
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path. (NIV)
We must be continually overcoming fear, but where does fear come from?
There are many places where fear can spring up, but our passage today addresses one of those places. Often, we will become overwhelmed with what is ahead of us. We see everything that must be done in a short amount of time. Or we see many things that feel impossible to accomplish and fear sets in. But today’s Scripture reminds us how God moves us forward in life.
His Word is a lamp for our feet, a light on our path. The imagery is walking through vast darkness with a simple lamp. We can only see a few steps ahead and depending on how deep the darkness, a lamp will only illuminate the next step. To overcome our fear, we must remember that much of what is causing us to fear will be different when we actually have to deal with it directly. God will provide unseen resources, and unthought-of ideas, or suddenly provide others to help us. Until we really have to deal with our fear, these things are not there because that step has not yet come.
To find these steps, we must go to the Word of God. In His Word, He provides these beautiful principles that guide us in relationships, help us discern the spirit or motive behind what we see from others, and teach us the spirit and behavior necessary for us to see His next step.
For example, the Bible says not to associate with an angry man. If we are concerned about what to do next and one option would partner us with an angry man, this is not the path God has for us. Another example is loving well. When we are patient and kind, not easily offended, this keeps us in the right spirit to hear from God.
In the end, God promises to give us what we need to overcome but not until we actually need it. Don’t look too far ahead of the darkness. Keep your eye on the Word and you will find your next step. Little by little, He will guide you through every situation.
Prayer: Lord, help me to trust that You will provide what I need when I need it and not fear. Let me keep my eyes on You in the Word so that I might know the next step as I walk step by step into Your good plan for my life. Amen.
