Our Highest Need

Our highest need.
Psalms 73:26
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever. (NIV)
In our immanent frame, that is our existence excluding our spiritual being, we learn early to lean upon our own resources. It is not that we do not know or understand that God is our Provider, but we are not all taught this from childhood. Some are taught this but never see it modeled. The other part that makes this difficult is God giving us the power to work within His structure for provision so it can easily seem that we are providing for ourselves.
We are very aware of our need for provision financially, physically, intellectually, and emotionally. We pursue provision in these areas with our heart and flesh, that is our own strength to provide in these areas. And God has given us great power in this area. We are quite capable on our own to supply for ourselves according to our own abilities and strengths. But our humanness cannot grasp what can only be found in the spiritual. In addition to these other areas where we need provision, our spiritual provision is the highest need.
Despite our natural disposition to see ourselves as flesh and bone, we are not. We are spiritual beings living within the human frame. Though we can do much to provide for our human needs, true peace and joy do not exist in that realm. Only in the spirit and by the Holy Spirit are we able to find what we are searching for. We can amass great wealth, friends galore, good food and drink, but in the end, if the part of us that is eternal misses the eternal existence found in God, life will end in restlessness and a failure to see, know or grasp what really matters.
Where our heart and flesh fail, God is our portion. In Him, we find the eternal qualities affecting fulfillment, contentment, peace, love, and joy. We don’t need anything else but Him. In Him, then, we find greater strength, even in our human abilities and strengths, to push our human frame into a spiritual existence. The building blocks of eternal existence have been made available to us right now through our relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The Bible says we are living stones being built into the spiritual temple of God where He is enthroned upon our hearts. This is the Kingdom of God that never wanes and always percolates through life’s issues that we might have everlasting life even within our human frame. Thanks be to God!
Prayer: Lord, never let me settle for the good things found in the seen, but let me press on to those celestial things unseen that I might live the life you have planned for me. Amen.
