Living by Faith

Solomon, blessed with more wisdom than any other man in history said, “Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards. (Song of Solomon 2:15).  It is the little things in life that make or break us. It is not the big decisions of life that create direction for our life. It is all of the little decisions that have formed our thoughts and behaviors that will determine the decisions we choose at the biggest moments of our life.  My old football coach used to say it like this, “It’s the little things that matter.”

2 Corinthians 5:7

For we live by faith, not by sight.

(NIV)

Faith is something we talk about a lot and the emphasis on this passage is our faith.  We are to live by faith, but for a minute, can we focus on the word ‘live.’ The KJV translates the word here as ‘walk’ by faith, not live.  The meaning of the original word means to tread in a way that creates a path. It is the small steps, the little foxes, the common, everyday things we do that will determine our path in life.  I don’t want to ask you today if you are living by faith in the big moments. I hope that when your life is falling apart when you are out of ideas to solve the problems all around you, when you desperately need a miracle, that you are living by faith.  But what about in the insignificant moments? Are you living by faith when it doesn’t seem to matter?

When we are just walking around in the morning like half-zombies trying to get moving for the day, are you living by faith?  Driving to work, getting your morning coffee, standing face to face with the convenience store clerk ringing you up, are you living by faith then?  The breaths you take that are not in the face of stress, worry, tragedy, are you living by faith then?

The Bible says that we are going to be held accountable for every careless word we speak (Matthew 12:36).  In the insignificant conversations, do you use words of faith? Words of doubt? Words of irritation? Words of apathy?  Sitting at your desk at work, counting down the minutes to the end of the day, is your mind full of thoughts of faith?

The Bible says that we are supposed to think about those things that are praiseworthy and excellent (Philippians 4:8).  We are to be rejoicing always the goodness of our God (Philippians 4:4). Every word out of our mouth should be a praise to our God or an attempt to build up those around us (Ephesians 4:29).

What thoughts are running through your mind when you are just sitting in front of the television?  We so easily numb ourselves and soothe ourselves with the flying pictures of the airwaves, but even then, we should look for ways to exert energy that blesses others, praises God, and elevates our spirit to Him.

Just imagine if we lived by faith, each step, each thought, each word, each moment.  How drastically would our decisions and behavior be in the biggest moments of our life?  Let me challenge you this next week to not only turn to your faith in trouble, but start living every moment in faith that Jesus is Lord of all, able to do all, is in all, upholds all, oversees all, and wants us to experience all of Him.
