Knowing God.
Job 33:9-10
9 ‘I am pure, I have done no wrong;
I am clean and free from sin.
10 Yet God has found fault with me;
he considers me his enemy. (NIV)
Who is God? The truth is that God is unsearchable. He is too sublime for words. Our minds are too constricted even in our wildest imagination to grasp His eminence. Before we can know God more, we must first realize He is too glorious for our natural mind. We need His help to know Him.
In Scripture, God referred to Job as blameless among all men, yet the Lord engaged in an experiment of suffering to prove Job’s righteousness to Satan and all the heavenly beings.
Job’s extreme suffering did not deter him in the beginning. He was not swayed in his faithfulness to God. But then, the suffering lingered. God had a second purpose that Job couldn’t understand. He was using pain to reveal to Job a pride he could not see. In his pain, Job reduces God in his own mind. He reduced God’s faithfulness and love even going so far as to accuse God of treating him as an enemy. Has your pain caused you to see God as less than He is?
Job’s reasoning was that God must not be just to allow suffering for a man so righteous as he. He pretends to understand the spirituality of all things well enough to declare God insufficient as a defender of the righteous. And God responds to his accusations.
God asks Job questions to humble him. “Do you know where light lives?” “Were you there when I set the boundaries for the ocean?” “Have you ever commanded the sun where to rise?”
God’s point to Job is that he was a mere man unable to understand the ways of God. What Job believed to be callous was God’s plan of perfecting Job to a higher level. This new faith allowed God to bless Job with more than he had lost knowing after this lesson, Job would remain humble. In all this, Job’s understanding of God was expanded.
We can know God more and more each day. But to know God more requires an understanding that without His help, it’s impossible to know Him at all. This is when we need the Holy Spirit to help us, so we don’t lose faith and reduce God to something he is not in our own minds. Then, we will know Him more.
Prayer: Lord, help me to humble myself when I don’t understand that I might know You more. Amen.
