Proverbs 27:1
¹ Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring. (NIV)

As servants of God, our greatest commitment is to be used by Him in a way that reflects His goodness and glory to all those we encounter. One way we struggle with this is that we want to determine how God can use us for His glory.

We gladly ask the Lord to use us, but then we fight Him if life doesn’t go the way we want it to go. We wrestle with God about the success we want to use for His glory. We do this because it is easier, or less painful, to be used by God in our success than our failures. It is easier to be used by God on the mountaintop than the valley. We must remember the Lord knows our limits and He knows what those around us need to see in our life so they might see Him through us.

Sometimes, people need to see a God that can sustain someone’s peace and joy in the worst moments. They may be in their worst moment, and they need to see the possibility of a God who loves them enough to sustain them in their nightmare. But this means we may be exposed to nightmarish moments as servants of God. And this is difficult.

This is why the Lord tells us to make plans for our future. The Bible says a noble man makes noble plans. In other words, it is quite Godly to pursue a direction that is pleasant to us so long as it is also pleasing to the Lord. But at the same time, while we are making noble plans, our passage today reminds us not to boast about these plans because we never know what tomorrow will hold. Perhaps, the Lord knows someone needs to see His power through our pain.

So as we plan, let’s not become so confident that we boast about all that we are going to accomplish. It’s not about us. Our treasures are in Heaven. And we never know how God will want to use us in the morning.

Prayer: Lord, help me to accept the circumstances that come my way as being commissioned to a mission field with people I may have never known if I had not faced that dilemma. Amen.
