Hell and the Love of God – Can they go together?

Is Hell real?  I’ve heard it said that Hell can’t be real because Hell and the love of God don’t go together.  Well, I have a different point of view.  To me, Hell is the love of God expressed.  I know I am going to get some hate mail on this one, but let’s go with it for a minute, shall we?

First, I want you to know that I spanked my children.  Yep, that’s right, I whooped my boys when they needed some whooping.  My Dad whooped me.  I imagine my boys will whoop their kids.  I realize that not everyone spanks and I don’t recommend spanking if you can’t control your temper.  The purpose of any discipline is not to denigrate your children, but to motivate them to change their behavior so they can have a better life.  It is negative reinforcement with positive motivation.  I never disciplined my kids, whether by lecture or spanking, without explaining to them how that behavior was going to cause harm to their life if they didn’t change it.

If I got on to my kids and they walked away with attitude, I increased the punishment.  If they were grounded for a day, suddenly it was two.  If they had to run the stairs up and down five times (yeah…I did that too), then suddenly it was ten.  And I can tell you that I have three beautiful boys with big hearts, strong faith, and solid convictions.  They are not perfect, but I am so blessed at how well they have turned out.  My youngest is about to be 15, but I can see that he is following his brothers’ footsteps.

Negative consequences are sometimes needed to help a child understand that the immediate gratification of something doesn’t mean it is a good thing.  Our flesh is always wanting ease and pleasure.  The flesh opposes anything that doesn’t give to it what it wants.  Well, if anyone is married, you know that your spouse doesn’t always give you what you want, but if your response to that is to oppose them, the marriage is really going to suffer.  Your boss is not always going to give you ease and pleasure, but a rebellious employee is a soon-to-be former employee.  And this brings us to the Verse of the Day:

Proverbs 13:24

24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son,

but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. (ESV)

Before you start sending me hate mail, let me also say that it is sinful to discipline in anger.  Whatever form of consequence you choose, it must be done in love.  Hmmm..

Could the creation of Hell come from a loving Father?

2 Peter 2:4
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; (ESV)

Oh…I know I may be messing some of you up there, but if God is love and all that He does pours out of love, then the creation of Hell must be love.

Love is not discipline.  It is the condemnation that comes after a lifetime of rejecting the Lord’s direction.  That is what the rod was used for primarily-to guide the sheep the right direction so they could find better pasture and fresh water.  Hell is the final attempt to motivate us to a better life.  Hell is God’s last ditch effort to guide humanity to greener pastures and refreshment for the soul.

Leave me a comment.  Do you think God making it known the eternal consequences of rejecting God’s presence is an expression of love?

Good Evening Pastor! I am one who Definitely believes in Disciplining. Therefore, to answer your question on does Hell and the Love of God go together? Yes Sir, I truly believe so. First I want to Compliment you on being brave and driven by the Holy Spirit to speak on such a subject on Hell because not all but majority of the Ministers today do not speak enough on Hell or God’s Discipline that helps to protect one from ever having to Experience such darkness and seporation from Him. I’m so happy to know that you showed your Children the Love of God by disciplining them with Love and understanding, not hate and negativity. That’s why as you mentioned earlier they are Wonderful young men of God Today. Furthermore, if I may also mention that I concur, being that all three of my children and grandchildren truly Love God and know in return that He Loves them even more because they were taught at a very young age the Love of God and I’ve had the privilege of receiving Complaints from others at how kind and Mannerable my Kiddos are and I’m sure you’ve experienced the same. However, it is very important that people come to realize that Hell is Definitely Real just as Heaven is Absolutely Real. Therefore, we need to Emphasize more on the importance of Discipline for all of us not just for our children because as adults we get out of line with our Heavenly Father as well. So, once again I just want to Thank you Pastor for bringing up such a Profound Message that is definitely ‘Good For the Soul’! I pray that God Continues to Bless you and your Beautiful Family as Always and Please, Sir, keep up the good work👍🏽

    Sincerely
    Tammy Walker and Family
