He Rides on the Clouds

He rides on the clouds.

Psalms 68:4
4 Sing to God, sing in praise of his name,
extol him who rides on the clouds ;
rejoice before him—his name is the LORD. (NIV)

It is a regular practice for companies, organizations, and even churches to bring in consultants. The idea is to bring in someone who is not entrenched in the regular operations because they are more likely to see what needs to be changed. We will walk by something in need of repair so often that we become blind to it.

We are creatures of ease. We take the path of least resistance. And what we resist the most is change. Our natural response is to do things the same way we have always done them. We are most comfortable in the familiar.

Our natural craving for what is comfortable can easily create distance from a God who is always doing a new thing.

The patterns of our lives quickly become a god to us. They satisfy our need for comfort and ease. Comfort and ease however keep us from moving forward in our walk with the Lord who calls us to continual transformation. To make a god of the comfortable patterns in life can steal us from greater things. We need a consultant.

Praise the Lord who is not entrenched in our world, in our way of doing things. He shakes things up, turns things upside-down, and makes us uncomfortable with a call to change. He brings us to places where we see that what is comfortable is no longer advantageous for His purpose in our life.

Though He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, His consistency is love and wisdom which have no set patterns. What is loving and kind in one moment will be insufficient in another. His firm character requires continual adjustment to love us into Him.

The Apostle Paul would later speak of being all things to all people. To love people and thus to love God, we must be ready for change, but how can we know how to change when we are ways permeate our way of thinking? It is only by the God who rides the clouds existing outside of our world to show us the way.

He calls for us to adopt His imagination for a good life. He equips our transformation by calling us to things that do not make sense and create uneasiness. Yet, we can trust that His wisdom is sufficient knowing we are too stuck in our ways to be able to see a different way.

Let us thank God and sing to Him a new song because He rides on the clouds.

Prayer: Lord, let me put my trust in You because You see where I am blind and lead me to new heights. Amen.
