17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. (NIV)
How old is the Earth? There are many different theories on this from the millions of years touted in secular science to the 6,000 years proposed by fundamental Biblicists. I don’t believe we can even know this. What I do know is that with all our technology and advanced civilization, we continue to see new discoveries. Though God rested from creating so long ago, so much continues to be revealed. I believe when Christ returns, there will still be facets of God’s creation that man has yet to discover. Why would God create so much more than we will ever find?
Our passage today reminds us that nothing is too hard for God. Creation stands as proof of this great power. Just as we continue to find more in creation, the omnipotence of God will never be fully understood. No matter how powerful you believe God to be, His power is greater. No matter how much peace He can bestow, He can give more. No matter how high His wisdom, it is higher. However good, powerful, perfect, and holy you believe God to be, He is more.
Paul’s intimacy with the Spirit revealed to Him that God holds all things together by His Word. Matter itself is held together by the pervading essence of our God. Without God, all substance we understand would be shattered in gamma-ray bursts of a number our finite language has yet to name.
The plenitude of His power so far exceeds our greatest need. If every existing atom in creation rests in the Word of God, how much more can we rest in Him. If all creation is our revelation of His power and ability, unmeasurable comfort comes when we place our life in His hands. If He holds all things together so easily without exertion, He can hold our life together.
Worried, stressed, nervous? Lay it all in the hands of your Heavenly Father. He is able, so much more than able to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we can even imagine asking of Him. He will hold you, your life, your family, your finances, your children, and your everything just as He holds creation in perfect order. Nothing is too hard for our God.
