God’s Love for His children.
Luke 11:13
13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (NIV)
Not too long ago, I was setting up for an event in my backyard and I stepped into a hole in my back yard. A slight sprain was all the damage done, but I wondered where the hole came from. I remembered once on our church property, we had a very tiny sinkhole caused by water issues. The hole was more than ten feet deep. I remember the plumbers going into the hole and being amazed at how big it was. But that hole is nothing compared to the Grand Canyon. It’s huge. But what about the oceans? Aren’t they just holes in the ground full of water? How much greater is the ocean than the Grand Canyon?
As much as we love our children, our love is like the tiny hole in my backyard and God’s love for His children is greater than a thousand oceans.
I am not the perfect parent and my children, as wonderful as they are, are not perfect angels. To be perfect is to be like God who is love. Perfection is to maintain the highest love at all times. It is doing what is best for the other every moment. This is how God loves us.
As a parent, I can tell you that I was often confused about what was good for my children. And even when I knew what was best for them, I did not have the money, the authority, or the resources to make it happen for them. My love wanted to protect them, but I couldn’t always, but God will protect our children even if that protection is found in Heaven forever. God, out of His love for His children, knows what is best for us and He is able to see it through to the end. To carry out what is best for us is not more difficult for Him than for me breathing. It is just what God does. It is who He is.
Of course, we are not perfect children. We don’t love Him perfectly. We are prideful and sinful. In fact, our love for Him is less than insufficient. But His love covers over my lack. His love is big enough to make up for what I don’t have. He loves me until I learn to love better.
If you love your children as imperfect, prideful, selfish, and sinful as we are compared to a perfect God, how much more does He love us and want the very best for us.
Jesus gives us this comparison so that we might have the assurance that His greatest desire is to give you the very best life.
Prayer: Lord, help me to remember my love for my kids and know God loves me so much more. Amen.
