An Alternative Perspective for Today

“The Lord has revealed what is to come to give us an alternative perspective for today.”
2 Peter 3:10-11
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives (NIV)
Living with our focus on the immediate is easy. All that revolves around us in each moment are more than enough to keep our attention. Yet, the Scripture does teach us to not be blinded from the prophetic by the immediate. God has made clear things that will come and He has made these things clear to alter our perspective of the immediate. We see this powerfully in today’s passage. We know of His future coming for an alternative perspective on today.
We must not forget that God always does what He says. For one hundred years, He told Noah of a flood that would come. Noah told the people. The people did not accept the idea of rain that would flood the Earth, but Noah believed God. Noah’s altered perspective caused him to build the ark.
Since the beginning, the Lord promised the coming of a man, the seed of a woman, Jesus. It has been centuries since God first promised the coming of Christ. Yet, when the angel came to Mary to tell her the time had come, she believed. Her faith made allowed her the honor above all women to give birth to the Messiah. God will do what He says and we must believe Him.
Scripture tells us that Christ will one day return. This has been preached for over 200 centuries, but many doubt it. Others may not doubt but have lost sight of this coming event. Advent in the Christian season is to remind us of this coming day when Jesus shall appear. The end will be at hand and each soul will face judgment and receive its eternal consequence, Heaven or Hell. If we believe this to be true that Jesus could come at any time to bring every soul to their final judgment, how should we live?
To be the light shed upon the person of Christ through our devotion and obedience to Him that others might turn to Him is the only answer. Our perspective must be altered so that our highest priority is to do all we can to help others avoid eternal death. Our witness is more important than any business deal, any marital struggle, or any personal goal. Let us live holy and godly lives.
Prayer: Lord, I trust You will do what You say. Each day, alter my perspective through my knowledge of your coming appearance. And let me live to prepare others for this magnificent event. Amen.
