Psalms 40:1-3
1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him. (NIV)
God can and will change our circumstances. Often, depression and anxiety can set it for fear that our current circumstance has no end. But as surely as seasons change so will this season of life. The new season could be a beautiful spring full of life and color. Or the next season could be as bleak as a dark winter storm. We can’t control life circumstances, but we do have some say in the seasons of our life.
God has delivered David from a nightmare season. The deliverance of God put a new song in David’s heart, a song of praise. But what music was in his heart before this? The song in our hearts today will influence the next season and the next song.
Before David’s deliverance, he was filled with a melody of hope. He says he waited patiently for the Lord. The situation was overwhelming and hope filled his heart.
When we are weighted down with hardship, it is easy to sing a song of frustration and impatience. We want God to move now and we generally have an idea of how we want Him to move. We pray for certain things to happen as if we are God and He is our slave bound to obey our every whim. The greater song is the song of hope.
Hope doesn’t demand anything of God but reminds us that He will not leave us in this valley for long. It is just a matter of time before God moves. This song draws us nearer to God for His goodness and protection. The song of frustration, the song of anger, the song of discontent will turn a rainstorm to softball hail.
We must remember God’s reason to allow the pain of the moment. He is allowing us to see if we truly love Him, truly trust Him, truly believe Him. Our response to His delay in the face of suffering can expose that we don’t honor God, we use Him. We don’t love Him but take Him for granted. Like a husband who is only affectionate to his wife when he wants sex, our praise is counterfeit.
To find a new hymn of praise from God, we first must sing hope as we patiently wait for Him. He will not disappoint our hope. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear.
Prayer: Lord, in hard times, give me the song of hope so the pleasant seasons might not be filled with counterfeit praise. Amen.
